Always Something New at Syna

  • Short Description: When it comes to creativity, we’re all about experimentation, exploration, and transformation. That means we’re always open to inspiration from anywhere, which you can see in the inspirations for our various collections.

When it comes to creativity, we’re all about experimentation, exploration, and transformation. That means we’re always open to inspiration from anywhere, which you can see in the inspirations for our various collections. And if you’re always looking for inspiration, always exploring the world around you, and always looking for new ways of working, you’re always going to come up with something new.

What is New?

What does it mean to be “new”? Hasn’t everything been done already? Maybe it has, but don’t let that discourage you: it hasn’t been done by you. You are what makes it new. Whatever you do, if you do it honestly and passionately (and not just because someone else is doing it or because it is profitable), will be original because it will carry a piece of you. That piece of you will connect with someone else. And that connection will be something that has never happened before.

But not every new idea works. Not every spark of inspiration starts a fire, and not every concept results in a new piece of jewelry. Again, we can’t let ourselves be discouraged by that fact. You could feel like you’re wasting your time, that you’ve failed, and that you’ll never create anything worthwhile. But if you’ve put your heart into it, and if you’ve grown from the experience, that time was not wasted. Failures are only failures if you fail to learn from them. When it finally clicks, and you produce something new and beautiful, something you’ve never done before, you see that all of that effort is a part of that final product, whether it is a new, original jewelry design or a recipe that you’ve modified, or a relationship.

Always More To Learn

When you’ve done something a few times, you start to feel like you have mastery over it. But if you want to keep it fresh, you can’t see yourself as the finished article, the all-knowing master of your craft. There’s always more to learn, and you can learn from novices and masters alike. So we’re always looking to evolve and grow, always flowing like a river. There’s a saying that you can never step into the same river twice: the water is always flowing, and that water you stepped into long ago has now emptied into the sea. Yet the river is still recognizable as a river, as a single, continuous thing. We are all like that river. We know who we are, and we have a sense of history and connection with others, but we are always changing and growing.

We will always keep that spirit of growth, open-mindedness, and adventure alive so that there will always be something new at Syna.

Award-Winning Jewelry That’s Close to Our Hearts

  • Short Description: In 2014, when, after a decade of growth, we won our first industry award. It would turn out to be the first of many. While the love of our customers is what keeps us going, recognition from our peers is nice, as well.

It’s been twenty years since we started Syna, but it would be another ten years before we really found ourselves and the courage to break out of the box and create truly unique designs. That came in 2014, when, after a decade of growth, we won our first industry award. It would turn out to be the first of many. While the love of our customers is what keeps us going, recognition from our peers is nice, as well.

Award-Winning

We designed our first award-winning piece, a mixed-metal owl pendant, just for ourselves. It was an experiment of sorts, our first time working with mixed metals. We set our imaginations free to design something whimsical and unlike anything we were seeing at the time. It ended up winning the Excellence in Design Award at the 2014 Centurion Jewelry Show, an invite-only trade show for the fine jewelry industry. That award gave us the confidence to continue in this experimental direction.

219

That owl pendant laid the groundwork for the kind of style Syna is known for today: sophisticated and timeless, but with an unmistakable identity inspired by special moments in life and in nature. We pushed ourselves even further into the realms of fantasy in the following years, when we created a dragon snake bracelet in oxidized sterling silver. The creature’s green tongue, made from three tsavorite gemstones, was the aspect that most intrigued everyone. That piece took home the Centurion Award for 2016.

220

In 2019, we won the “Best in Silver” Couture Design Award for our coral reef earrings in oxidized Silver and yellow gold. Having been members of the Couture community for a decade, it was the award we had always dreamed of.

221

And most recently, in 2023, another nature-inspired piece brought us another Centurion Award. This time, our hand-carved blue sapphire Mogul horse cufflinks took the award in the Men’s Jewelry category.

Staying True

It was by being true to ourselves and doing what we loved that allowed us to create our first award-winning piece. We stuck to that lesson throughout our careers, producing jewelry that, first of all, has to delight us. If what we’re creating isn’t close to our hearts, it won’t touch yours. Knowing who we are, where we’ve been, and where we are going has helped us unlock our potential—and gave us the confidence to create pieces we know will do the same for you.

Behind the Fine: What Makes Our Jewelry Fine?

  • Short Description: Our jewelry isn't meant to be worn for a season and discarded, but sources of happiness meant to bring you a lifetime of enjoyment. Here’s everything we do that puts the “fine” in fine jewelry.

We take great care with every aspect of our fine jewelry, from designing pieces you’ll love, to sourcing and cutting gemstones, to using handcrafted techniques in the production process. It is the use of only the best materials on offer that makes our jewelry “fine” jewelry. These aren’t pieces meant to be worn for a season and discarded, but sources of happiness meant to bring you a lifetime of enjoyment. Here’s everything we do that puts the “fine” in fine jewelry.

Behind The Fine

Part of making fine jewelry is working with only the best in their field. Our manufacturers are spread out all over the world, but what they all have in common is a commitment to the traditional process of making jewelry. This allows us to look to the future by combining the best of the past and the present, using time-honored techniques to fashion timeless designs. The result is a piece of jewelry that can be worn every day, for all of your days, and will always look fresh. All of our items are the unique product of an individual craftsperson. This commitment to quality takes time, but the result is worth waiting for!

Most of our collections are made from 18k gold, offering durability without sacrificing luxury. Our 18k gold alloy gives our pieces their beautiful, subtle hue, whether in yellow, white or rose gold. We also accent our pieces with sterling silver and black rhodium. “Sterling” describes silver that is at least 92.7% pure, while black rhodium is a rare type of platinum that we use to give some of our pieces a dramatic depth and a timeless, vintage look.

Active in Every Part of the Process

Our gemstones are cut and polished in our stone lapidary in Jaipur, India, and we take an active part in the entire process, from sourcing to production. We are not only committed to giving you the highest quality fine jewelry. We also have a responsibility to leave the world in better shape than we found it [link to social responsibility].

We set out to spread joy through beauty, and we know that objects meant to bring happiness cannot have their origin in practices that cause harm. If that were the case, have we really made the world more beautiful?

Beauty can’t come out of ugly practices, so we root our work in an ethical sensibility. That’s why we have a zero-tolerance policy toward conflict diamonds. All of our business practices are based on fair and transparent trading. We hold to these principles when sourcing gemstones and metals, when working with suppliers, manufacturers, and other partners, and when serving our customers.

Art is all about capturing a moment and transforming it, allowing us to see our lives and ourselves in different ways. We started Syna with a vision for what jewelry could do as an artistic medium, and how it could capture moments of joy and crystallize them into objects of beauty. We’re so happy to see that vision bear fruit for us and for everyone in the Syna family.

Crafting Future Heirlooms

  • Short Description: The union of art and craft—imagination and application—is something that has always been important to us. Our jewelry has to look as fresh in ten or fifty years as it does today.
  • Long Description: The union of art and craft—imagination and application—is something that has always been important to us. We never want to follow trends, as trends are fleeting and will ultimately make your art quickly seem dated or anonymous. Our jewelry has to look as fresh in ten or fifty years as it does today.

The union of art and craft—imagination and application—is something that has always been important to us. We never want to follow trends, as trends are fleeting and will ultimately make your art quickly seem dated or anonymous. Our jewelry has to look as fresh in ten or fifty years as it does today. What might look great now could look cheap or cliché in the very near future. So rather than just make jewelry, we aim to craft works of art that will stand the test of time, and that will remain a part of your life as trends change, styles evolve, and your life experience leads you to see the world in new ways.

In this way, we’re creating heirlooms for you and your family. But for a piece of jewelry to become an heirloom, you first have to love how it looks. It has to resonate with you in some way. We believe that as long as our designs come from the heart, they will find a place in yours.

To do this, we approach jewelry design as an art and a craft. It’s one thing to have a great idea, but you also need the craft to execute it. Art is the transformation of experience into an object, whether a painting, a poem, a film—or a piece of jewelry. It comes from being present in every moment, opening yourself to receive inspiration, and finding meaning in even the smallest things. We are always looking for little sources of joy in life, and we transform that joy into something we can share with you through our jewelry.

Craft is the work that goes into that transformation: the skills, the tools, the application of knowledge, and training. Our jewelers are always learning. No matter how good you are, there’s always something more to learn! When you’re first starting out, the amount of things you need to learn in any field is overwhelming. When you get a little experience under your belt, you might start to feel like you know everything. But true masters of a craft know that despite all of their knowledge and experience, they know only a fraction of what’s out there, and they never stop studying and learning from every situation. That’s what it takes to craft a jewel that looks great now, can be worn for any occasion and will be cherished by future generations.

Our jewelry is crafted for everyday wear, to be a part of your life. But it’s also crafted to last a lifetime—many lifetimes, we hope, as that special piece is handed down from generation to generation, with all of your family’s memories intact.

Every Design Has a Story

  • Short Description: We can’t go into the past, but we can bring a piece of it into the present and transform it into something that is meaningful to us.
  • Long Description: While we can immerse ourselves in people and culture, we can’t go into the past, but we can bring a piece of it into the present and transform it into something that is meaningful to us, creating new meanings for old traditions.

The course of our lives has taken us around the world, from India to the United States and everywhere in between. We’ve found inspiration in every one of those places, from the pink palaces of Jaipur to the shining glass edifices of New York City’s skyscrapers. Architecture certainly inspires us, but the people, the culture, and the history of these places all have stories to tell. While we can immerse ourselves in people and culture, we can’t go into the past, but we can bring a piece of it into the present and transform it into something that is meaningful to us, creating new meanings for old traditions.

But it’s not just these great monuments and lofty ideas that inspire us. As we began looking for inspiration, we quickly learned that it was there to be found in anything. A morning in the backyard, a stroll through the neighborhood, or a deep conversation with friends can become an adventure and inspire your art if you live your life with your eyes open.

Living With Your Eyes Open

That’s really what inspiration is about: living with your eyes open, being receptive to the beauty around you, the beauty to be found in everything from the complex patterns of an ancient bas-relief to the way a spoon resting in a coffee cup reflects the sun. Everything can be a source of inspiration if you’re open to seeing it. Inspiration isn’t something you wait for; it’s something you have to look for and be ready to receive. Everything has a story to tell.

All of those stories, both great and small, find their way into our work. As jewelry designers, we are always looking for ways to crystallize the stories of our lives as a piece of jewelry. It’s why we favor elegant, simple designs that feature bold pops of color. Their clear lines and patterns reveal an inner life, an experience or emotion cast in gold and gemstones. Every design comes from the heart, captures a piece of our lives, and tells the story of a moment.

A Story Belongs to Everyone

A story doesn’t just belong to the teller, either. The listener imparts their own experiences and their own emotions, and by doing so becomes part of the story. That’s how stories remain relevant for centuries, and how a piece of jewelry can remain close to your heart for a lifetime: they’re not just these static moments in time; they continue to grow and evolve and take on new meaning. There’s a spiritual experience in art in that we all experience it together, feel closer to the people around us, and find meaning in the world that surrounds us.

There’s inspiration in everything, a story to be found in every object and every interaction. That’s what we hope to convey in our designs. When you wear a Syna piece, you are sharing in an ongoing story, which will in turn become lasting memories.

Good Vibes Only

  • Short Description: We’re all about spreading good vibes. When we bring that mindset to work, work becomes play, a state of freedom, peace, and joy.

As a family-owned, independent jewelry business, we’re not just about selling jewelry. We also want to use our platform to add more beauty to your life. Every time something new is created, it radiates energy into the world. We learned that back in 2003, the year our first daughter was born and the year we founded Syna. So we want the energy we put out to be positive, to put smiles on faces. We want to create things that are beautiful, things that bring people joy, and things that inspire and uplift.

We see it as our responsibility, in a way. A work of art, whether a piece of music or a piece of clothing, a painting, or a pair of pearl earrings, has the almost magical ability to affect people’s outlooks and emotions. With that in mind, we want our effect to be a constructive one, joyful and peaceful, full of love and laughter.

To put it another way, we’re all about spreading good vibes. When we bring that mindset to work, work becomes play, a state of freedom, peace, and joy. And when we marry our intent to spread good vibes to that sense of play, the result, we hope, is beautiful pieces imbued with these values. Whether we take inspiration from nature, from architecture, or from the wonders of the cosmos, the goal is the same: good vibes only!

Our mission to make the world a more beautiful place is so important to us because we experienced our share of hardships in trying to establish a family and a business in a new country. Syna wasn’t an instant hit. It wasn’t an overnight success for us. We had to keep working hard, even when the sales weren’t there at first while supporting two young children. Staying positive and believing in what we did kept us going. We continued to create with love, and that laid the foundations for success.

Love, Family, Positivity

Love, family, positivity, and community sustained us through difficult times, and we owe so much of our success to those unbreakable bonds. As we’ve grown together, new partners have become a part of that community, and everyone who loves our jewelry has become a part of our family. Those personal bonds we form are one of the great things about being a small company. Together, we can make the world a more beautiful place.

We believe a more beautiful world is a more peaceful and joyful world. We set out with that message in our hearts-whenever we go to work. When you wear a piece of Syna jewelry, you’re wearing a piece of that peace and joy in physical form. And that’s all we really want: to be a beautiful part of your beautiful life.

India in Technicolor

  • Short Description: Saffron clad holy men. Red-swathed brides. Blushing marigolds. Blue skinned Gods. Color is the most vibrant way we express identity as people and every inch of India's landscape bears testimony to this fact. Let's celebrate the often, whimsical, always radiant inner spirit that manifests itself in the technicolor face of India.

Saffron-clad holy men. Red-swathed brides. Blushing marigolds. Blue-skinned Gods.

A besotted traveler once christened India to have the "largest color palette in the known universe." Every inch of India's landscape bears testimony to this fact. Color is the most vibrant way we express our identity as people. Because color speaks directly to man's emotion, India's riot of color arouses a tempest of sensation. Yet, the clash of colors has a bold and balanced aesthetic all on its own. Syna celebrates the often whimsical, always radiant inner spirit that manifests itself in the technicolor face of India.

SAFFRON

Saffron carries a more powerful message than any other color in India. In the robes of the sadhu and the ubiquitous marigold offering is the stamp of spirituality that every Indian knows at a glance.

PEACOCK BLUE

Peacock Blue is an indescribable mix of green-blue-gold, yet iconic of the nation. The color of playful divinity, peacock blue is India's unique signature color.

WHITE

White marble monuments, jasmine offerings, saltpans, ash on a forehead. There is no one Indian white. Everywhere, a new shade tells a new story.

PINK

Pink is always a shout of color in India. Whether in a dew-bathed lotus, a heap of "gulaal" or a turban, pink reflects the nation: hot, bright, ravishing, never subtle.

BLACK

Black temple carvings. Gleaming midnight stone idols. Black marks to ward off the evil eye. India understands the mystical, magical power of black, and knows how to use it well.

INDIGO

Indigo in a hundred shades soothes the eye. deep blue stone, indigo dye, aqua coastline, delicate blue pottery. All under the arc of a fiercely blue sky.

SILVER

Silver could well be India's national metal. From auspicious coins to anklets to temple idols to silver embroidery, India is a nation in love with silver.

BROWN

Brown mud walls lovingly adorned. Brown pots baking in the sun. Brown spice, brown rope, brown earth. If India's color palette were a symphony, brown would surely be the bass.

GREEN

The green of the paan leaf and the paddy filed, of the temple pond, and a spread of fresh chilies. Green is India's flag of ripe fertility.

Our Big Fat Indian Weddings

  • Short Description: Indian weddings are not only one of the most important milestones in the journey of any family, they are also some of the most dazzling, full of beauty and color.

Weddings are not only one of the most important milestones in the journey of any family, they are also some of the most dazzling events, full of beauty and color. This makes them not only wonderful celebrations of the family but endlessly inspiring events for any artist or designer—Indian weddings doubly so. We want to take you on a journey into our big fat Indian weddings.

200

In the past year, we attended three spectacular weddings in three different cities. In December 2021, we attended the wedding of Namrata’s nephew Rohan in Jaipur, and a month later, we were in Nagpur for the wedding of DK’s niece Neha. Just a few months ago, we visited Udaipur to see Namrata’s nephew Aayush get married. Jaipur and Udaipur, by the way, are in the state of Rajasthan, in the northwest of India, while Nagpur is right in the heart of India, about 400 miles northeast of Mumbai. For all of these events, dozens of relatives from all over the world came together to celebrate.

No Simple Affair

Indian weddings are not simple one-day affairs. The festivities can start up to a week before the marriage ceremony, with a number of parties, gatherings, and ceremonies taking place.

The first ceremony is the Haldi ceremony. If you’re a fan of Bridgerton, you’ve probably seen this ceremony performed. The Netflix series is one of the few times this wedding tradition has been depicted in Western media, but nothing can beat actually being there and taking part in this beautiful ritual in which the bride and groom are immersed in a turmeric and sandalwood paste before the wedding day. At Neha’s wedding, the bride and groom sat in golden lotuses and were showered with flowers by all the guests.

196

Everyone’s favorite event, however, is the Sangeet night. We spend the night singing and dancing to everything from traditional songs to Bollywood and Hollywood favorites. Only those of us with the most stamina made it to the after-party, which went on until 5 am the next morning!

195

Seven Pheras

The wedding ceremony consists of seven pheras, or circles around a sacred fire, while the panditji (priest) recites mantras and the couple takes their vows. During the ceremony, the bride wears a wedding dress that is a gift from her maternal uncle.

197

All of the men at the wedding wear a turban. The color of the turban changes at every wedding, with family from the bride’s side and the groom’s side wearing different colors of turbans. There are special people who drape the turbans on men at every wedding, an art form that not many know.

194

Guests sit down to a lunch called Sajjan Goth, which is hosted by the bride’s family to honor the groom’s family and bid them farewell. The food is always the traditional  Dal Bati Churma (dal = lentils, bati = baked wheat ball, churma = sweetened crushed wheat).

198

Note the traditional ornate silver peacock seating presentation at the Sajjan Goth. Each event has its own décor and every wedding has its own style, but the aesthetic is always ornate without looking cluttered. The color palettes are always vibrant and lively but refined and never jarring.

We hope you enjoyed this look into Indian wedding traditions. As you browse our collections, maybe you’ll see the influence of these vibrant yet refined and sophisticated styles. Enjoy!

Quiet Luxury: The Understated Statement

  • Short Description: Luxury is no longer about making the most noise with brand names and logos everywhere. It’s not about conveying status or calling attention; it’s about wearing something that is well-made, meaningful, and quietly stylish.
  • Long Description: Luxury is no longer about making the most noise with brand names and logos everywhere. It’s not about conveying status or calling attention; it’s about wearing something that is well-made, meaningful, and quietly stylish.

Music is not just about the notes. Chord progressions, melodies, harmonies, and the way these components interact are part of the experience, but dynamics matter, too: when to play loud, when to play quiet, when to keep it steady, when to surprise the listener and get quiet when they’re expecting loud. And perhaps even more important than the notes you play are the notes you don’t play: the silences between phrases, the gaps that create rhythm.

Meaningful

While playing lots of notes at a high volume makes a lot of noise and gets noticed, the gaps and silences, space and rhythm, make a thoughtful statement. It’s the same in other art forms—the colors you don’t use, the space you don’t fill, the ideas you don’t express, the action you don’t explain is as meaningful as what you actually do paint, or write—and fashion is no different. Luxury is no longer about making the most noise with brand names and logos everywhere. It’s not about conveying status or calling attention; it’s about wearing something that is well-made, meaningful, and quietly stylish.

The distinction underlines the difference between flash and taste, between the latest hype and a carefully considered aesthetic. The person interested in the latter exudes confidence and personality: they are not making purchases based on status but on what they find beautiful and made with craftsmanship and artistry.

More Joy

It is also about making intentional choices. We are all becoming increasingly concerned about the future, about what kind of world we want to create, live in, and leave for future generations. These attitudes filter into our purchasing habits. We want things that are going to put more joy into our lives and into the world. We want things that are going to last a lifetime, not fall apart or fall out of fashion in a year. We’re not buying to show off wealth or show that we’re part of some trend; we want things that are meaningful to us, that connect us with others, things that are handmade and are built to last.

You know how good your clothes and jewelry are, and that makes you feel good about yourself. It doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks, or whether or not they know what brand you’re wearing or how much you paid for it because you’re doing it for yourself. And soon, others will take notice. Not because you’re calling attention to yourself, but because of the aesthetic you’ve put together and the confidence you exude while wearing it. You’re not making a lot of noise; you’re playing the silences, making music in the pauses. That’s the essence of “quiet luxury,” the understated statement.

The azure hues and gentle waves perfectly captured the essence of this glamorous coastal town. It's amazing how even a fleeting moment in St. Tropez can leave a lasting impression, turning a simple click into a cherished memory. Sometimes, it's the briefest encounters that capture the heart and soul of a place so perfectly.

Reunited in France: A Family Affair

It's always a joy when family joins you on vacation, especially when they travel all the way from Mumbai. We've shared countless memories from our days in Mumbai 20 years ago, and though we don't meet that often, every reunion feels like no time has passed at all. This trip was no exception. We seamlessly picked up from where we left off, creating new memories while reminiscing about the old. It's moments like these that remind us of the enduring bonds of family, transcending time and distance, making each gathering feel wonderfully timeless and filled with joy.

Bougainvillea Beauty in Saint Paul de Vence

We have a particular soft spot for bougainvilleas, and seeing them draped elegantly over the doors in Saint Paul de Vence was nothing short of inspiring. These vibrant blooms, cascading in lush clusters, added a romantic and picturesque touch to the charming village streets. Their vivid colors against the rustic stone walls created a scene straight out of a painting. Shopping online used to be just for small, inconsequential purchases. But with improvements in security, e-commerce web design, and shipping, consumers are more comfortable buying just about anything online. Even luxury purchases can be made online without worry.

There are now thousands of jewelers and jewelry designers selling online. But how do you know who you can trust? Here are a few things you should look for when browsing an online jeweler’s website.

Time in Business

First of all, look at how long the company has been in business. While a new business certainly can create great products and give great service, a jeweler that has been in business for a decade or more has a clear record of sales, quality products, and satisfied customers behind it.

Communication

Drop them a line. How long does it take to respond? A quick response time means the business knows the value of your time. They know you are eagerly waiting for an answer, and you deserve to receive one quickly to put your mind at ease. Furthermore, the business should have multiple ways of getting in touch. A business that offers phone, email, text or chat, and social media accounts shows that they have the customer in mind, allowing them to choose their preferred method or social media platform for communication. Businesses don’t have to offer every single one of these, but of the ones they do offer, response time should be fast.

Responses should not only be fast but should be professional and courteous, as well. Every piece we craft is a unique treasure, and so is every customer.

Price

We’re all looking for the best value, but when it comes to luxury jewelry, a price that seems too good to be true should have you asking questions. When you have a master of their craft working with precious metals and real gemstones, the price is going to reflect that. While you never want to pay too much, you should be a little suspicious of prices that seem too low. Suspiciously low prices are often accompanied by vague product descriptions that seem to be hiding the fact that they are selling something gold-plated rather than solid gold, for instance.

Support

What else is the jeweler offering? Most jewelry stores offer affordable repair options to their customers. You should also be able to count on a reasonable return policy and extras like care and cleaning guides. Is your online jeweler doing the same? Compare the policies and extras of a number of online jewelers to get a sense of the industry standard.

That last point also works as general advice. Compare different online jewelers. You’ll get a good sense of the quality of each, the style and selection of each, and the customer service of each. Once you see what the standard is, we hope you’ll see that we go beyond it.

Sankara Eye Foundation

More than 80% of cases of blindness are preventable. But too many people lack access to the healthcare that could treat these preventable diseases. Dedicated to giving the “Gift of Vision” to those who normally could not afford it, Sankara Eye Foundation uses the 80/20 rule to give free eye care to 80% of their patients, an endeavor funded by the paid services of 20% of their patients.

What began as a single clinic in the south of India grew steadily over the course of 40 years to become a network of more than a dozen hospitals across the country. We are proud to be associated with an organization dedicated to bringing all that is beautiful in the world to everyone’s eyes.

Smile Train

Cleft lip or palate is a condition that affects 1 in every 500-750 live births around the world, the result of tissues of the face not joining properly in development. It is a common condition that can cause major problems with feeding and speech, and can also lead to hearing problems and ear infections, not to mention the social and psychological effects. But the good news is that it is treatable with a relatively simple surgery.

That is why we support Smile Train, a New York City-based nonprofit that has spent the past two decades providing surgery and support to over a million children in almost 100 countries born with a cleft lip or palate. Beyond the surgery to repair the condition, they also provide speech therapy, psychological counseling, and nutritional services to children affected.

It was watching the documentary Smile Pinki that inspired us to join Smile Train in their mission to change the world one smile at a time. The film follows the struggles of Pinki Sonkar, a five-year-old Indian girl living with a cleft lip. Pinki’s story does have a happy ending, though, as she eventually receives free cleft lip surgery through The Smile Train.

Soka Gakkai International

SGI acts on these values by engaging in peace activities such as human rights education, promoting sustainable development, and joining in the movement to abolish nuclear weapons. The most diverse Buddhist community in the United States, SGI boasts more than 500 chapters and 100 centers across the country. Soka Gakkai reminds us that everything is interconnected, and we all share the responsibility of caring for one another and our environment.

The Many Facets of Jaipur, the Pink City

  • Short Description: Jaipur is a city close to our hearts. With its sublime architecture, magical colors, and vibrant culture, it’s a place that has a lot to offer to artists and dreamers of all types.

Jaipur is a city close to our hearts. With its sublime architecture, magical colors, and vibrant culture, it’s a place that has a lot to offer to artists and dreamers of all types. Indeed, Jaipur lives in the imaginations of people all over the world, enchanting all who visit. It’s a tourist destination not only for international travelers, but for people from other parts of India, as well. But no matter where they’re from, visitors to the city can’t help but fall in love with the city’s magic. And you’ll find a piece of the magic of Jaipur in our jewelry, both literally and figuratively: not only is the city an inspiration, but it is also home to the world’s greatest lapidaries, and it is where all our stones are cut and polished.

Located in the state of Rajasthan, between the tropical forests of the east and the Great Indian Desert of the west, Jaipur is a city at a geographical crossroads. It’s a crossroads in another sense, too, a mix of past and present, a vibrant, modern city where history comes alive. Beyond the resorts and popular historic attractions, you can find yourself strolling through a neighborhood of high-rise apartments and office buildings one minute, and the next minute you’re peering through a line of trees at a magnificent sandstone haveli (mansion) built in the Mogul style, combining elements of Islamic and Indian art.

Timelessness

There’s a sense of timelessness to be found on the city’s narrow streets that lie beyond the wide main thoroughfares. Parts of the city are exactly as they were 100, 200, 300 years ago, with buildings dating back to the city’s founding in the 1700s. These places are the city’s soul, and you can feel its vitality in the old frescoes, in the arcaded walkways, in the street vendors selling everything from food to rugs to gemstones. The city itself is a work of art, but like all great works of art, there is a great deal of thought and planning behind it. Jaipur’s original architects designed the city by combining European urban planning theories with an Indian design philosophy called vāstu śāstra, bringing together the best of what the world has to offer. Whether you’re designing a city or a piece of jewelry, you have to keep your eyes open to different styles and different approaches. It’s how you create something original and timeless.

But it’s not just the buildings that are beautiful. The people of Jaipur embody the timeless sense of the city. You’ll hear many languages spoken, a mix of modern and traditional attire, and many different cultural traditions practiced, but what the people there have in common is a real joie de vivre that some might find lacking in the denizens of larger cities. This warm disposition goes hand-in-hand with living in a beautiful city full of parks, lively bazaars, and historic buildings that carry the rich and creative tradition of the Mughal era into the 21st century.

Craftmanship

Everywhere you look you’ll find craftsmanship, whether in the small restaurants serving kachori and lassi or in the towering edifices of Jaipur’s famous palaces. It is clear that the city’s architects valued both the function of a place and its aesthetic. The pink sandstone of the City Palace, Hawa Mahal, or any of the city’s other iconic buildings that give the city its nickname, can appear pastel in the sunlight, bright orange in morning, berry in the shadows of afternoon, and sandy on a cloudy day. Like a well-cut gemstone, different light, different weather, even different seasons give the Pink City a different character. When arrested by the beauty of these places, you begin to understand that the two aren’t separate, form and function, but work together to make a thing what it is. What it does and how it makes you feel can’t be separated. That is the union of art and craft that we try to bring to everything we do.

Syna means Together

Syna is a small company. We like it that way. We work together closely, family and friends, to create something truly special. When you come to Syna, you become part of our circle, a friend, and a collaborator. We are committed to treating everyone with integrity, respect, and responsibility. We want to be part of your success, and we invite you to be part of ours.

Every design has a story

As world travelers, we have taken great joy in searching for ideas and seeing how one inspiration leads to the next adventure, and how all of our stories fuse together over time. Every Syna piece has a little bit of that story, a fragment of history, design, or culture, all woven together into wearable art. From the inspiration that birthed it, to the way it was made, each jewel is a unique blend of ideas and experience. Every design has a story and tells a story. And then the story extends to you because each jewel’s story becomes your story when you buy it and wear it, gift it or share it. At Syna, you are not buying jewelry, you are creating stories, which in turn will become lasting memories.

Beauty is in the details

Beauty is in each of the elements that come together to create it. What you see when you look at a Syna jewel, is the result. The simple sophistication transforms classic ideas into a modern aesthetic that is simultaneously familiar and fresh. We always try to push the boundaries of creativity, and we have a strong desire to bring rich, saturated colors to everything we create. The intricate details in our designs merge ancient techniques with modern aesthetics in a way that every woman can connect and resonate with. Beauty is what you feel when you see it. And it’s in all the little details!

Always Something New

At Syna, we love to explore and experiment. We're always open to new ideas and excited to try new materials and concepts. That's the reason why there is always something new at Syna. Just like nature, we are constantly evolving. Like a river that is always ebbing and flowing, we tread along and discover new, beautiful, and eye-opening ideas that inspire us to share them with you the only way we know best. At Syna, you'll always find something fresh, something that will inspire you, something that brings a smile to your face.

Future Heirlooms

At Syna, we don’t make jewelry. We craft it. It’s not enough to come up with a beautiful idea or a beautiful gemstone. It takes craft to merge those elements into a keepsake, a jewel you want to wear every day. Our jewelers work endlessly and passionately to learn skills, old and new, and decide which modality to apply to every piece they make for the most exquisite result. It takes craft to make a jewel that can be worn every day, for years and decades. It takes craft to create an heirloom that can be handed down. We share our joy through jewels that have been made to fit your life, and which symbolize all that is good about intentional, conscientious creation. In the end, aren’t we all building a legacy, for future generations to enjoy?

Good Vibes Only

We create jewelry, so visual beauty is a big part of our positive vibrations. Every time something new is created, it radiates energy into the world. Creating so much energy comes with responsibility. We want the energy that we put into the world to be joy, laughter, peacefulness, and love. We imbue everything we do, and everything we make, with these values. When you become part of the Syna experience, a big part of that experience is knowing that we don’t just want to sell you beautiful jewelry. We want to be a beautiful part of your beautiful life. And with good vibes only!

Why We Only Work With Solid Gold?

  • Short Description: In order to deliver the most beautiful, durable, and valuable fine jewelry, we use only solid gold in our pieces. We never use gold plating, gold filling, or gold vermeil. But what exactly does all that mean? And why is solid gold the superior choice? Let’s look at the differences between these four types of gold jewelry.

In order to deliver the most beautiful, durable, and valuable fine jewelry, we use only solid gold in our pieces. We never use gold plating, gold filling, or gold vermeil. But what exactly does all that mean? And why is solid gold the superior choice? Let’s look at the differences between these four types of gold jewelry.

Gold-Plated

When jewelry is gold-plated, a thin layer of gold is added to a base metal. The base metal could be anything. It could be extremely cheap zinc, it could be copper, it could be an alloy like brass or stainless steel. Since the layer of gold is so thin, even minor scratches can expose the base metal underneath the gold plating.

Gold Vermeil

This is a type of gold plating in which the base metal is 925 sterling silver. You’re still getting a minuscule amount of gold, but if the jewelry is described as “gold vermeil” and not “gold plated,” you can at least take comfort in the fact that the base metal is silver, a precious metal, and not something cheap. Gold vermeil is also known as silver gilt or gilded silver. The term “silver gilt” is more common in British English, while “gold vermeil” is more common in the United States. And in the United States, there are laws stipulating that any product advertised as “gold vermeil” must contain sterling silver and a certain amount of gold, so any reputable jeweler will not call something “gold vermeil” unless it adheres to these regulations.

Gold-Filled

Gold filling is like gold plating in that it consists of a layer of gold on top of a base metal. The difference is that while gold-plated jewelry contains only 0.05% gold, gold must make up at least 5% of the total weight of gold-filled jewelry. So while they may look similar—a thin layer of gold on top of a base metal—gold-filled jewelry contains 100 times more gold than gold-plated jewelry! The thicker layer of gold means that gold-filled jewelry can withstand much more wear and tear than gold-plated jewelry.

The filling process is different from the plating process, as well. In gold-filled jewelry production, a gold sheet is wrapped around the base metal, heated, and rolled until the metals are bonded. This is why vintage gold-filled jewelry is often referred to as “rolled gold.”

Solid Gold

Finally, there’s solid gold jewelry. Sure, it’s more expensive, but that’s because it will last a lifetime, unlike gold-plated jewelry. It is also less likely to tarnish than many of the types of base metals used. With all types of gold-plated jewelry, the base metal can tarnish, and that corrosion will begin to affect the appearance of the gold.

This isn’t to say that gold will never tarnish. 100% pure gold does not tarnish, but even 24k gold is only 99.99% pure. So while 18k gold can tarnish, it is highly resistant to tarnishing, especially if you care for your jewels properly.

All That Glitters Is Not Gold

Though visually indistinguishable from solid gold at first glance, gold plating can be easily damaged and is not ideal for fine jewelry. Gold-filled jewelry can be a beautiful and more durable alternative, while gold vermeil guarantees that what’s under the gold is another precious metal suitable for fine jewelry. None of them, however, beat the value and durability of solid gold. No matter the gold plating technique used, the outer layer of gold can get scratched, exposing the base metal, and the base metal can also tarnish and damage the gold layer. Even exposure to water can damage the bond between the base metal and gold layer. And don’t forget that different base metals can cause allergic reactions when they come in contact with the skin. Gold may be the hardest hue to hold, according to Robert Frost, but solid gold will keep its beauty and its value for much longer.
